DIY Armoire Makeover

diy armoire makeover

A fresh coat of navy paint and a little distressing made this armoire beautiful again.

My friend inherited this armoire at her last move and had it painted when her first son was born 8 years ago.  It was cute for a little boy but really, really bright blue and the finish wasn't doing justice to the curves and carvings:

We made it a little more mature with navy paint, distressed edges and aged brass hardware:
(Please forgive these pictures, navy blue is really hard to capture especially in bright daylight!)

The hinges had been completely painted over with royal blue:

I stripped them down to their natural brass finish with Citristrip and steel wool.
Now they compliment the piece again:

I found new (old) hardware at United House Wrecking in Stamford, CT.
The hardware is aged brass and has a really great worn feel, definitely not as shiny as it appears in this picture:

All surfaces got a good sanding, especially on the edges and what would be exposed:

I filled the existing holes where there had been two wooden knobs and replaced with more appropriate brass hardware pulls:

The paint is Benjamin Moore 1 part midnight navy and 1 part black.
Distressed and stained with Minwax provincial.
Sealed with 2 coats clear satin polycrylic.

  1. It looks great! The distressing does do a much better job of showing off the pretty details.

  6. I just love that navy with the old, mellow brass, one of my favorite combinations.
