"B" is for Boy's Bedroom Makeover

A boy's bedroom makeover.

A complete boy's bedroom makeover featuring all DIY Ana White furniture builds.

Since moving in 10 months ago my son's bedroom has been a mess:

We started with dated feminine wallpaper, a simple metal bedframe, nothing hung on the walls and complete disorder - that's a recipe for a makeover.

After a ton of hard work and his room is finally functional and beautiful.

I pulled together furniture I had built in the past plus a few new pieces along with stripping the wallpaper, adding paint to the walls and trim, new wood shades and shutters and building a shelf in the eaves to complete the space.

A complete source list with links to posts and free plans is down below at the end of this post.

My son is only six so he doesn't necessarily sit a his desk yet but it provides good surface area and storage.  See the full play table desk post here.

Next to the desk I placed the rolling dresser which has tons of drawer space for most of his clothes.
And above the rolling dresser is a cubby shelf, the perfect display spot for all his little knick knacks:

To keep it all in perspective below is the before picture, just as the room looked when we first saw our home at the initial walk through:

The previous owners did a beautiful job of keeping everything period relevant in this 1740 primitive saltbox home however I've chosen to update the space to reflect a younger generation while still paying tribute to the historical features.
It's a tricky balance between honoring the past while stepping forward in time.

I still need to paint the louvered doors leading into the hall.

Yes I know the flag is supposed to hang the other way, with the star field to the left however it was sewn the way you see it now so it will remain.

The pop of red from the #1 shelf against the blue walls (Benjamin Moore old navy matte) goes great with the red exterior (Benjamin Moore cottage red) peeking in from the windows.

One of the absolute best features of this bedroom is the shelf I built in the eaves just above the windows.

It is the perfect landing spot for legos.

I opted to use old wood knobs on the shutters.

There's still a bit more work to be done in this room, as you're looking out into the hallway there are two built-in shelf units on either side of the doorway.

For some reason the built-ins do not match each other at the upper portion???
I plan to remove the added paneling on the right side and install additional shelves then give all the built-ins a fresh coat of paint (and paint the louvered doors too).

wall paint: Benjamin Moore old navy matte
