DIY Wood Cake Slices

diy wood cake slices

Looking for a clever and crafty gift idea using scrap wood?  I've got an easy project making these diy wood cake slices, so easy in fact you'll want to make a whole cake full!

I first shared the wood cake slices on Instagram back in January (be sure to follow me there for project sneak peeks and more behind the scenes looks):

Today I'll show you just how to cut and assemble these fun faux food cake slices.  You can paint the cake and frosting your favorite flavors like chocolate, vanilla or strawberry!

Then add small details for decorations to fit your theme or event.  Sprinkles, decorative trim, and any frosting design or swirls makes each slice unique and yummy.

I added a 1/4" plywood circular 'plate' for these two slices and then wrapped them up in cellophane as part of a birthday gift:

The candles are spindles from an old crib but a simple ciruclar dowel will work too.

I think I'm partial to this classic chocolate cake with white frosting and rainbow sprinkles!

How to make a wood cake slice:

Supplies:
  • 2x6 scrap wood piece
  • miter saw
  • jig saw
  • 5/8" circular dowel (or spindle)
  • palm sander
  • wood glue
  • 2" finish nails and nailer
  • drill & 5/8" spade bit
  • acrylic paints & paint brush
  • wood skewers
  • yellow felt
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks

Step 1: Set your miter saw to 20 degrees and cut off end of 2x6 scrap.  Flip board over and make second cut to get one 'slice' of cake.

Each piece of cake takes two slices.

Step 2: To make curved edges trace around the base of a quart paint can.  Use a jig saw to cut off corners.

Step 3: Predrill hole for candle using spade bit.

Step 4: Attach the bottom piece to the top piece using wood glue and finish nails from below.  I also added one countersunk 1 1/4" wood screw down into the candle hole.  Sand everything smooth.

Paint as desired.

Step 5: To make candle cut a short 1" piece of wood skewer and hot glue in between felt flame.
