DIY Chocolate Easter Basket

Sharing my Martha Stewart inspired Easter basket today and I decided to make a chocolate Easter basket.  Real chocolate is always a good idea for any Easter basket but my version is full of faux chocolate bunnies and eggs.

A special shout out to Ariel from PMQ for Two for organizing this blog hop and challenging us, I'm so happy to have my chocolate Easter basket included.

I used scrap wood and plastic eggs then painted everything dark chocolate gloss to make it all look like real chocolate.

The fence style basket is a diy building project (free plans here) and I thought the bunnies and eggs would be best in a white basket to contrast against their dark chocolate color.

The bunnies are made from 3/4" scrap wood and can stand alone.  These taller bunnies are very similar to the real chocolate bunny shape you see in retail shops.  I just did a google search for free bunny clip art to find the best shape.

Below are step by step instructions to create the chocolate bunnies and eggs.

A note on the paper grass - the version I used is from CVS Pharmacy and comes flat, cut into a spiral shape and hinged at one end.  It's by far the best idea I have seen for paper grass because it's all attached as one piece.  No loose strings of plastic grass flying around your house!

wood bunnies cut on bladerunner

Step 1: Print out your desired bunny shape (google 'free bunny clip art' to find options).  Use spray adhesive to adhere paper printout to wood.  Use a scrollsaw or bladerunner to cut out bunny shape.  Peel off paper and sand smooth.

Step 2: Paint bunnies and eggs using DecoArt Americana gloss enamels in dark chocolate.

After 2-3 coats the bunnies and eggs will look like real chocolate!

Tie ribbon around the bunny necks, fill the basket with paper grass and then add all your chocolate goodies!  A beautiful, chocolately Easter basket that will last forever!

Hi Jaime,
Your Martha inspired Easter basket is darling. That paint color is so good...it really looks like chocolate. I can imagine someone little giving them a nibble just to test. :) My kids would enjoy playing with this basket for hours.
